Regional Leagues – Overview

The Wheelchair Football Association (WFA) supports six Regional Powerchair Football Leagues across England, providing crucial competitive opportunities on a local level. These leagues, which operate independently with their own committees and structures, serve as vital stepping stones for teams aspiring to qualify for the National League. Each regional league plays a significant role in developing the sport and creating pathways for players to advance to higher levels of competition.

Regional Leagues are essential for offering competitive opportunities at a local level, structured geographically to ensure that players from various parts of the country can engage in Powerchair Football. They provide a vital pathway from grassroots participation to national and international competition, enabling players to develop their skills and progress through the ranks.

South East Powerchair Football League (SEPFL)

The South East Powerchair Football League (SEPFL) has been a cornerstone of regional competition since its inception in 2013. As the second-largest regional league in the country, the SEPFL boasts around 70 players across 14 teams. Clubs range from Poole in Dorset to Norwich in Norfolk, competing in two divisions with promotion and relegation. The highest-finishing team not already in the National League earns a chance to enter the national league playoffs, offering a potential route to higher competition.

North East Powerchair Football League (NEPFL)

Established in 2013, the North East Powerchair Football League began its competitive play in the 2013/2014 season. It currently features twelve teams from six member clubs, divided into two divisions: NE Premiership and NE Championship. This structure is designed to accommodate various levels of ability, ensuring competitive balance and development opportunities for all participating teams.

North West Powerchair Football League (NWPF)

Founded in 2009, the North West Powerchair Football League has recently celebrated a decade of competition. Over the years, the league’s format has evolved to meet the needs of its clubs. The NWPF now focuses on facilitating player and team development, offering a supportive environment for participation and growth in the North West region.

South West Powerchair Football League (SWPFL)

The South West Powerchair Football League was established in 2015 by Helen Phelps-Starbuck, who recognised a need for a dedicated league in the region. As the founder of Ocean City PFC, Helen’s initiative aimed to bring together individuals with physical disabilities from across the South West to compete in a structured league. Since its formation, the SWPFL has provided a vital platform for local players and teams.

West Midlands Powerchair Football League (WMPRL)

The West Midlands Powerchair Football League (WMPRL) is the largest regional competition in the country. Now in its fifth season under its current identity, the WMPRL was formerly known as The Birmingham Ability Counts League. It features approximately 100 players across 19 teams, competing in three divisions: Premiership, Championship, and League One. The WMPRL’s extensive structure supports a wide range of abilities and ensures a robust competitive environment.

East Midlands Powerchair Football League (EMPFL)

The East Midlands Powerchair Football League is a developing competition with plans to expand during the 2024/25 season. This league aims to provide more opportunities for players in the East Midlands, contributing to the overall growth and development of Powerchair Football in the region.

Overall, the WFA’s Regional Leagues are instrumental in fostering talent and supporting the sport’s growth across England, ensuring that players at all levels have the opportunity to participate and excel in Powerchair Football.
