Football Foundation Project

In 2010 the WFA was awarded £135,000 from the Football Foundation, supporting a 3 year project to increase participation in powerchair football.

With a total project cost of £256,000 the project enabled the WFA to employ a National Development Manager to lead on the delivery of the project. This project included purchasing equipment and a trailer to initiate activity in new areas.  The WFA engaged with various partners, including Invacare UK, Davies Sports and the Football Association.

The headline achievements from the project included:

  • An increase from 22 clubs at start of 2009/10 season to 38 clubs in 2012/13 season.
  • A 5% increase in the number of registered players within affiliated clubs.
  • A total of 177 people undertook the WFA Coaching Powerchair Football course and a total of 22 undertook the officials’ course, exceeding the projects combined target of 144 new workforce members.
  • An increased investment into powerchair football for clubs, totalling £326,600.
  • An increased investment into the infrastructure of powerchair football totalling £583,889.
  • The launch of new website and social media presence to increase awareness of the sport.

The Football Foundation is the UK’s largest sports’ charity. Funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and the Government, the Foundation directs £30m every year into grassroots sport.

The Foundation receives money from the very top of the professional game and also from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport through Sport England. It then uses this money to leverage even more partnership funding, to deliver a programme of new and improved community sports facilities in towns and cities across the country.

Its mission is to improve facilities, create opportunities and build communities throughout England.
