The FA Regional & National Emerging Talent Programme

The FA Disability Football Performance Programme is dedicated to developing successful England teams by focusing on six key capabilities: technical skills, physical fitness, tactical understanding, psychological resilience, social integration, and overall commitment.

Launched in 2018 in partnership with The WFA, the FA talent pathway aims to identify and nurture elite Powerchair Football talent. This programme supports the transition of youth players from the WFA League structure to the England Powerchair Senior Squad through a range of performance services, including sports psychology and nutrition.

England Senior Squad staff, along with The WFA and the FA’s Para Football Talent Programme, regularly attend league events to assess players’ technical, physical, social, and psychological attributes.

Regional Emerging Talent Programme

The Regional Emerging Talent Programme (RETP) for Powerchair Football is an initiative designed to identify and develop promising young players in the sport. Managed by The FA and supported by The WFA, this programme provides a pathway for young talent to progress through regional training camps.

Open to players aged 12 to 21, participants are selected based on their potential, commitment, and ability to advance in the sport. Throughout the programme, players receive expert coaching and engage in drills that enhance their skills and confidence on the pitch.

Key Focus Areas in the RETP:

Once selected, players in the RETP receive targeted coaching focused on the six core capabilities essential for success in Powerchair Football:

  1. Scanning: Players are trained to effectively observe their surroundings, including the position of the ball, opponents, teammates, and available space, to make informed decisions.

  2. Timing: Coaches emphasise the importance of recognising the right moments to act, responding swiftly to cues such as an opponent’s poor touch or a sudden opportunity.

  3. Movement: For Powerchair Football, this focuses on the precise control and manoeuvring of the powerchair. Players learn how to use their chair’s movement to shield the ball, position themselves advantageously, and navigate the pitch effectively.

  4. Positioning: Players are guided on optimal placement on the pitch, including how to align their chair to gain tactical advantages over opponents or support their team.

  5. Deception: Training includes techniques to disguise intentions, such as faking moves or using subtle body language to mislead opponents, creating openings and opportunities.

  6. Techniques: Emphasis is placed on mastering the technical aspects of using the powerchair for passing, shooting, tackling, and other key actions to ensure high-quality performance.

Selection and Nomination Process

Players are initially nominated by their clubs and assessed by a selection committee from The WFA and The FA. This process is designed to be inclusive, focusing on diverse talent from various backgrounds. Successful candidates are invited to regional training camps where they can demonstrate their skills and potential.

Those who excel in the RETP may advance to the National Emerging Talent Programme, which offers further development opportunities and prepares players for higher levels of competition.

National Emerging Talent Programme

The National Emerging Talent Programme (NETP) builds upon the foundation established by the Regional Emerging Talent Programme (RETP), focusing on identifying and developing young athletes with the potential to represent England in international powerchair football competitions. While the RETP provides regional-level training and skill development, the NETP offers a more intensive and specialised approach, aiming to prepare players for the highest levels of competition.

Participants in the NETP benefit from enhanced resources, including expert coaching and access to advanced training opportunities, to refine their skills and increase their competitive edge. The programme is designed to support those who have demonstrated exceptional potential at the regional level, providing a clear pathway to the international stage.

Both the RETP and NETP are integral to the FA’s talent development strategy, each playing a crucial role in the progression of young players. The RETP focuses on regional development and the initial stages of the talent pathway, while the NETP is dedicated to preparing players for national and international success.

League football continues to complement these programmes, allowing players to gain regular competitive experience alongside their development within the talent pathway. This holistic approach ensures that players are well-prepared to excel at all levels of the sport.

England Development Sqaud

The England Development Powerchair Football Squad is an essential part of The FA’s Disability Talent Pathway, aimed at nurturing young talent with the potential to represent England at the highest levels. This squad, which includes players typically aged 16 to 25, is selected based on their skills, potential, and commitment to powerchair football.

The primary objective of the development squad is to create a clear progression route for players competing within the WFA National League. This pathway is designed to facilitate their advancement to the England national team, with the ultimate goal of competing in prestigious international events such as the FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup and EPFA’s Nations Cup.
