Commentary Course – Alan March Sport

Commentary Training Course

Building on our successful efforts in streaming the National League, The WFA is delighted to announce our second initiative aimed at nurturing new talent in sports commentary. We’re coordinating another in-depth Commentary Training Programme for ten dedicated members of our community. This opportunity will equip you with the essential skills needed to bring our exciting games to life through engaging and insightful commentary.

Date & Time: The commentary training course will be held over the course of two consecutive days, starting at 9:00am and ending at 5:00pm on each day. The first session is scheduled for Saturday, August 10th, and the second session will follow on Sunday, August 11th.

Venue: This commentary course will be delivered at Derby Arena, Royal Way, Derby. DE24 8JB

Fee: With support and funding from our partner, Amazon Web Services (AWS), we can offer this course to the selected participants for free. We request that those participating then give back to The WFA by putting their new knowledge and skills into action by commentating at our National League and WFA Cup competitions.

The training will be conducted by Alan March Sport (AMS), a renowned firm with over 20 years of experience in the field. Application Process

If you require further information about the Commentary Course, please contact WFA National Development Officer Ryan Sipple at ryan.sipple@thewfa.org.uk.

To apply, Alan March Sport requires applicants to submit a 60-90 second audio clip of themselves performing commentary. This can be for any game or even a fictional scenario – what’s important is showcasing your voice and style. Please note that all applicants for the commentary training course must be 16 years of age or older.

Please title the email “Powerchair Training Course Audio Clip”, provide your name and send it to: info@alanmarchsport.com

After the application deadline, Alan March Sport will review all submitted audio clips to assess each applicant’s potential as a commentator. This process is designed to evaluate your voice quality, articulation, and overall style in delivering dynamic and engaging commentary. From this, ten individuals will be selected to participate in this exclusive commentary training course.

Premiership Preview – Gameweek 5

PTC Therapeutics Premiership – Gameweek 5 Preview

by Daniel Ball

It’s already that time again, we have reached the end of another season and it’s been a great one, with everything still to be decided going into the final weekend of the PTC Therapeutics Premiership at the Lee Westwood Sports Centre. There is a title decider, a very tight race for 3rd and 4th and also a nail-biting relegation battle. It’s all set to be a fantastic final weekend.

AFC Bournemouth Warriors’ woes continued last time out, with safety now an impossibility for them, the highest they can finish is 10th. There are ten points between them and the play-off spot; despite this, they have to believe that whilst there is a mathematical chance of finishing there, then they can do it. It will be tough as face opening games against in-form Teesside and Newcastle ahead of two absolutely crucial games against their relegation rivals Brighton and Nottingham. They will have to be perfect to avoid demotion to the Championship.

After a tense 0-0 draw with rivals West Bromwich Albion, Aspire PFC remain three points clear at the top of the table. So far, they have done everything right whilst being chased by the champions, and this will have to continue in order for them to lift an eighth league title. Some potential banana skins await Aspire as they play Newcastle, Sevenoaks and Northern Thunder. If they make it through those games and West Bromwich Albion do what is expected and win their games, then it could come down to these two sides. An Aspire win could see them crowned champions, whilst an Albion win will put it in the champions’ hands. This will be the biggest match of the season.

Brighton & Hove Albion PFC kept their survival hopes alive with an important win against Bournemouth on Gameweek 4. They currently occupy the relegation play-off place but are living dangerously, with Nottingham only one point behind and breathing down their necks. Brighton have some very difficult fixtures facing Villa Rockets, Teesside, West Brom and Aspire. They do, however, have a crunch game against Bournemouth which could prove to be the most important match of their season.

A fantastic previous weekend saw Leeds Chariots PFC move up to 6th place, joining a cluster of teams on 25 points, all hoping to finish 4th. They have done what they needed to do to gain safety, and now they are looking to finish strongly ahead of an exciting season next year where they will look to build on this and push further up the table. This weekend, they play a WBA Throstles side sat on the same points, and a Sevenoaks side sat on the same points, highlighting how close it is. They also play relegation-threatened Nottingham and a tough match against Northern Thunder. There are some good opportunities for Leeds to move away from their table rivals.

After a slow start last weekend, Newcastle United Foundation PFC finished in good form, notably opening up a usually defensively sound Villa Rockets team with a 4-0 win. They are in pole position, sat in 4th and are only five points off a shaky Northern Thunder. With some favourable games against Bournemouth, Throstles and Villa before a potential upset win against Aspire, Newcastle will feel they are the ones to finish 4th and maybe even catch their city neighbours. A good finish to the season will put them in high spirits ahead of the cup final next weekend.

Northern Thunder struggled last weekend, slipping to a big defeat against West Brom, the standout result in a poor run. This has all but seen their outside title hopes disappear. Whilst their final season as a club hasn’t finished how they would have wanted it to, they surely will go out with a bang, and they still have a say in the title race as they take on both Aspire and West Brom across the weekend, they could make or break the league winners this year. They have some winnable games against Sevenoaks, Nottingham and Leeds, it’s set up for Thunder to sign off with a flourish.

Nottinghamshire PFC have some very promising games in their bid to avoid relegation, they can climb above Brighton and secure a playoff place with results against Bournemouth, Leeds and Teesside. It could be a difficult start as they begin with Thunder, but after that, with some difficult games for Brighton, there is a real chance they can save their season for the time being.

Sevenoaks PFC find themselves within the mix of teams on 25 points. Whilst they may have thought they could finish in 4th, it’s perhaps unlikely they will finish there, considering they must play Aspire and Northern Thunder. They always turn up and are solid and clever tactically, so there are points still to gain for the Kent-based side. They have some potential points to be won against Throstles and Leeds, which would allow them to gain some territory over their rivals for 4th spot.

It was a phenomenal weekend for Teesside PFC last weekend as they took 11 points from 15 and didn’t lose a match, putting them into a great position just one point behind Newcastle in 4th. They face the bottom three sides Bournemouth, Brighton and Nottingham, as well as an opportunity against Villa Rockets. Expect some more great performances from Teesside as Tyler Reeve looks to celebrate his World Cup place with a good points tally.

It was a mixed weekend for Villa Rockets last time. They started with a brilliant 0-0 draw with Northern Thunder, in which they were disappointed not to come away with all three points. They then got a good win against Brighton and a decent 0-0 draw with Teesside. Uncharacteristically, they were on the end of a 4-0 defeat to Newcastle, which saw them concede an unusually high number of goals. This weekend, they face Brighton again before West Bromwich Albion, the reverse fixture catalysing a poor run for Albion. They then have some difficult games against Teesside and Newcastle. With the right performances, Villa can certainly hope to finish in or near 4th position.

West Bromwich Albion PFC will not relent in their quest for a fifth consecutive title. They find themselves still only three points adrift from the summit with the potential to get to the top should they beat Aspire in the crucial top-of-the-table duel. To start the weekend, there is a derby match against WBA Throstles. They then take on Villa Rockets and Brighton before that game against Aspire. Their final game is against Northern Thunder, a game which could see their hard work undone if Thunder and Ed Common can find clever ways around them. West Brom will not be thinking about that and will be solely focused on winning the league.

Finally, West Bromwich Albion Throstles are too in the hunt for 4th place, level on points with Villa, Leeds and Sevenoaks. They face an unnerving game against their parent club first before an important game against Leeds, having won the reverse fixture. A tricky game against Newcastle follows before another big game against Sevenoaks. If they can get their passing going and put the ball in the back of the net, Throstles could beat anybody, and they will be hoping to find this winning formula to finish as high as 4th.

Whatever happens this weekend, it’s been a fantastic season with a new level of quality discovered by teams, with some great football and performances on show. It’s going to be very exciting and we can’t wait to see what happens.

Premiership Preview – Gameweek 4

PTC Therapeutics Premiership – Gameweek 4 Preview

by Daniel Ball

This weekend sees the return of the PTC Therapeutics Premiership at the Lee Westwood Sports Centre.

We are at the business end of the season now, where every performance and every point is crucial. There are battles up and down the table for the title, the best of the rest and the relegation fight. It looks to be another fantastic weekend of football.

After securing their place in the WFA Cup final, Aspire PFC look strong at the top of the league. It’s been a great season for them, not always playing the prettiest football but certainly showing they have what it takes to be champions. On Saturday, they take on WBA Throstles before a preview of the cup final against Newcastle United Foundation PFC. On Sunday, they begin with a match against Brighton & Hove Albion PFC before the biggest game of the season against fierce rivals West Bromwich Albion PFC. There is a great case to be made that this match could decide the title race already; should West Brom emerge victorious, they will retake 1st position on goal difference, however, Aspire could win and sit six points clear of the champions. All eyes will be on that game.

AFC Bournemouth Warriors tough season continued throughout the last weekend,  rooted to the bottom of the table, they are the only team in the division not to have picked up a point yet, and they have a very unhealthy goal difference after three weekends. Despite this, they put in arguably their best performance of the season against Aspire, showing true spirit and bravery against the league leaders; this should give them confidence going into this weekend as they face fixtures against Leeds Chariots PFC and Teesside PFC, before some significant fixtures at the bottom of the league against Nottinghamshire PFC and Brighton & Hove Albion PFC. If they can take the desire they showed against Aspire into those games, they should have great belief that their season is not over yet.

Since Gameweek 1, Brighton have been playing with three players, a difficult task for any team, especially a team fighting relegation. Their performances with such a disadvantage have been exemplary; they have fought hard and played with no fear, earning an exceptional 0-0 draw against Northern Thunder. James Mason has stepped up when his team needed him this season and the Seagulls will surely continue to impress the rest of the league with their spirited performances. They will need to be strong as they face the champions West Bromwich Albion, Villa Rockets, and title-chasing Aspire ahead of a huge fixture against AFC Bournemouth Warriors which could boost their survival hopes.

The much improved Leeds Chariots side this season will be looking to put some distance between themselves and the bottom three clubs by taking points from their first two games against Bournemouth and Nottinghamshire. Points here would really benefit Leeds as they have some difficult games against Sevenoaks PFC and Northern Thunder to come on Sunday. Dan Rigby will be looking to regain his England first-team spot and there is no doubting he has the quality to do that and to help his team climb up the league.

Newcastle United Foundation PFC are only moving upwards. A quality season sees them vying to finish 4th alongside a remarkable run to the WFA Cup final. Sam Smith will be hoping to score more goals for his boyhood club, whilst the impressive Oli Crawshaw will look to build on his recent success in the England development squad. They begin with a competitive game against Teesside PFC, followed by Nottinghamshire and Aspire, a good opportunity to get a feel for their opponents in the final. They then face WBA Throstles and Villa Rockets, both of whom are tussling with Newcastle for that 4th position. You never know in football, but Newcastle will be confident they can get something from all of their fixtures this weekend.

Northern Thunder made the extremely difficult decision to fold at the end of the season. A real loss to the sport as one of the oldest and most successful clubs. They will hope to end the season on a real high; they still have a chance to win the title as they are only six points off the top and three points off West Brom, who they will play this weekend alongside games against Villa Rockets, Sevenoaks and Leeds. They have the talent and the belief to win the league, so don’t be surprised to see them win these games and potentially pull off a scalp against the champions.

It’s been a tough season for Nottinghamshire, they have really suffered from the absence of Adam Langley from the side. With that in mind, they are only two points away from 10th-placed Brighton after starting to pick up some important points. They have five games this weekend, facing off against Newcastle, Leeds, Sevenoaks, Bournemouth and Teesside. There are some favourable games in there, and they will be confident that they can gather enough points to escape the relegation zone and start to look up the table.

Sevenoaks PFC were mightily impressive last time out; playing with three players, they won both their Saturday games and put in really well-organised performances with a clear plan, making their opponents work extremely hard to break them down. They still occupy 4th position and will have the opportunity to retain it as they play Northern Thunder and WBA Throstles out of their closest rivals. They also have some favourable matches against Leeds, Teesside and Nottinghamshire. Sevenoaks are a very well-run club with some brilliant technical players who always put in a shift.

Teesside PFC have found themselves slowly falling down the table in recent weekends. Whilst this may look worrying, they do have 17 points so far this season which has them secure. There will be some tight and competitive games for Teesside, who face a strong Newcastle side, before a run of potentially kinder fixtures against Sevenoaks, Bournemouth, Villa Rockets and Nottingham. Teesside games have been known to be close and low-scoring; however, they always create chances, and if they can put them away, Teesside could fly up the table.

It’s been another solid season for Villa Rockets. Their defensive displays are always admirable, and it’s rare you’ll see them give up any more than one goal in a game. What will frustrate Villa the most is their struggles to score multiple goals in matches, they are often very low scoring. After a tricky start against Northern Thunder, they take on Brighton, Teesside and Newcastle with opportunities to gain some more points to further solidify themselves in the race to finish 4th.

After they were knocked out of the WFA Cup at the hands of Leeds Chariots, West Bromwich Albion will be keen to keep up their winning run since the struggles of Gameweek 2. They are only three points away from the top of the table in 2nd; however, they have some difficult fixtures on paper. They will expect to beat Brighton ahead of a potential banana-skin against local rivals WBA Throstles. Sunday will be their biggest test as they face Northern Thunder, who will be up for it with the chance to go level on points with West Brom. Then comes the massive game against Aspire; if they can win that game, they will be back to the top of the table. West Brom can show they have what it takes to be Champions if they can find their way through those matches.

WBA Throstles have started to gain some momentum, the squad finally starting to click, and performances are improving, culminating in a superb 2-2 draw with Northern Thunder. They start their weekend against Aspire, where they will be looking to help out their parent club West Bromwich Albion before potentially hindering them as they play them in their next game. Then there is an opportunity to get revenge against Newcastle, who beat them in the WFA Cup semi-final, before taking on Sevenoaks to contest for that 4th spot. If they can keep up their form, there is no reason why Throstles can’t take 4th spot by the end of the weekend.

The weekend is going to be magical; so many great football sides, huge match-ups and still everything to play for. We cannot wait.

WFA Chairperson Vacancy

WFA Chairperson Vacancy

The Wheelchair Football Association are looking to recruit a Chair of Trustees to lead us on our charity mission of Powering Positive Progress.

The Wheelchair Football Association (WFA) was formed in 2005 to govern the sport of Powerchair Football in England. Recognised by the FA, who sanction our laws, the WFA was initially a voluntary organisation focused on raising awareness, providing guidance to newly formed clubs and establishing a national competition. By 2009 the number of clubs had grown sufficiently for the WFA to begin applying for funding to employ a Development Officer to expand the services provided to members.

Powerchair Football is a unique sport that provides opportunities for people with a high level of impairment to access sport. It is the only active team participation sport for people who use powered wheelchairs. The sport is fast-paced, dynamic and fun to watch. Due to the unique nature of the game, it allows all ages, disabilities and genders to compete together. Powerchair Football enables disabled people to participate in regular activities and provides them with competition – something that the majority probably won’t have experienced before due to their impairment. As a result, it builds key life skills such as teamwork and communication. It brings strangers together, many of whom have similar stories and life experiences, creating friendships and bonds which last a lifetime.

We receive funding from the FA and charitable organisations to fund the full-time employment of a National Development Manager and National Development Officer. We also have partnerships with UK and International companies which help us to fund our National Competitions (comprising of a Premiership and Championship League, each with 12 competing teams). The England Powerchair Football team are the current European Champions, beating France on penalties to lift the trophy in Finland in 2019. With the World Cup in Australia later this year, it is a very exciting time to enter the sport.

Our Mission & Values

Our mission is Powering Positive Progress. This is achieved by:

  • Ensuring Powerchair Football is accessible to the widest number of its target audience.
  • Encouraging and promoting the sport of Powerchair Football to improve conditions of life, assisting with integration into the game of football and society.

We will work to achieve our mission by working on the following fundamental values. These values reflect the association’s commitment to promoting inclusivity, equality, and accessibility in sports. The WFA’s values include the following:

  • Passionate – Reflected in our actions as an organisation, the attitude of our staff and our collective commitment to the professional governance and ongoing development of Powerchair Football in England.
  • Inclusive – Open, honest, diverse, inclusive, equitable, supporting and welcoming irrespective of gender, disability, race, sexual orientation, or age.
  • Progressive – We support all individuals to reach their full potential, championing inclusion, physical activity and wellbeing, accessibility, sustainability, and innovation, applying a growth mindset towards learning and improving as an organisation and sport.
  • Collaborative – Whether with members, players and families, facilitators, partners and community stakeholders, we collaborate across football, disability and community networks to achieve the best possible outcomes for our sport.

Role Overview

The Chair will provide inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees and the association, as well as hold the Board and Executive Team to account for the charity’s mission and vision, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity.

The Chair will also support and, where appropriate, challenge the Trustees and ensure that the Board functions as a unit and works closely with the entire membership of the charity to achieve agreed objectives. They will act as an ambassador and the public face of the charity in partnership with the Trustees.

Location: Birmingham County FA (Board meetings usually take place remotely)

Time commitment: Six Board meetings per year. The Chair is also expected to have regular contact with the Trustees and represent the Charity at various events and meetings with key stakeholders.

Reporting to: WFA Membership

Principal responsibilities include Strategic Leadership, Governance, External Relations, Efficiency & Effectiveness, and establishing a Relationtionship with the Board of Trustees.

The ideal candidate will have or have had experience as a senior executive within a sports organisation, but this is not essential. Premiership Preview – GW2

PTC Therapeutics Premiership Gameweek 2 Preview

by Daniel Ball

The wait is finally over; after a long winter break, the PTC Therapeutics Premiership returns. After the standards we saw in the first round of matches, there is every reason to be excited for this weekend. Here’s what to look out for from the teams this weekend:

Aspire PFC sit 3rd in the table and will be disappointed to have slipped to an unexpected defeat against Teesside PFC, which leaves them three points off the top. This weekend is favourable for them, seeing them take on the bottom two sides as well as the up-and-down WBA Throstles. They also face a dogged Sevenoaks side which could prove tricky. However, with two experienced England players and the lively Dan McLellan, they will be confident they can pick up maximum points this weekend.

Newly promoted AFC Bournemouth Warriors find themselves bottom of the league after heavy defeats, no doubt as a result of only having three eligible players, due to classification problems. This issue has now been resolved and they will look to compete for points against Newcastle, Sevenoaks and Leeds. These games could be crucial as they play table toppers Northern Thunder followed by Aspire in their last two matches.

Brighton & Hove Albion PFC returned to the Premiership in impressive fashion, with James Mason scoring six goals as they grabbed wins over Sevenoaks and Nottingham. He’ll be hoping teammate Matt Francis can set him up for some more as they face Teesside, Newcastle and Sevenoaks before a tough fixture against Northern Thunder.

Sat in 10th, Leeds Chariots PFC find themselves with a gap of four points from the bottom two and were extremely disappointed to end up losing the seven-goal thriller against West Brom at the end of the first weekend. Despite this, they strengthened their squad with the addition of Logan Mitchelson and will look to overcome some difficult fixtures against WBA Throstles, Villa Rockets, Newcastle and Teesside before a crunch match against Bournemouth that may see the Chariots put seven points between them and the bottom side.

Newcastle United PFC will be excited to unveil their new recruit this weekend, boyhood Magpies fan Sam Smith, who is back after leaving Northern Thunder at the end of last season. “Playing for Newcastle United is an amazing opportunity and I can’t wait to represent my boyhood club in the National League”. Sam told us. “It is something I have always wanted to do, and to wear the number 9 shirt makes it even more special. The squad is exciting and full of talent, so I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do this weekend and beyond”. With some good-looking fixtures for Newcastle against Bournemouth, Brighton and Leeds, 9 points would really benefit them as they also face West Bromwich Albion, a game that seems unlikely to result in any Newcastle points.

Northern Thunder had a fantastic first weekend, winning all four of their games, scoring 17 in their game against Bournemouth. This run of form sees them top the table. Patrick Kelly seems to have added some more quality to their team, coupled with the world-class Ed Common, Thunder will be looking for four wins again. They take on Nottingham, Villa Rockets, Bournemouth and Brighton. With West Brom below them on goal difference and chasing, they will have to be perfect to keep themselves in 1st place.

From the heights of finishing 4th last season, it was a miserable weekend for Nottinghamshire PFC, who, in the absence of Adam Langley, lost all of their games and find themselves already four points from safety. They do have quality however and Sam Langley remains hopeful they can turn their fortunes around. Here are his thoughts: “Following the fixtures in December, we made a change to the squad during the transfer window. We are hoping to secure some much-needed points this weekend.” On paper, it looks difficult for Nottingham, who play both Northern Thunder and Aspire. They will however, back themselves to get some points against WBA Throstles and Villa Rockets.

An impressive start to the season sees Sevenoaks PFC just three points away from the top of the table, sitting in 4th, albeit having played a game more than the teams in front of them. They are a solid and organised team with clever tactics and should they keep playing the way they did in December, they could be top of the table if they can find a way to outsmart West Brom and Aspire; they also play Brighton and Bournemouth, where they will feel confident.

Teesside PFC remain in the Premiership as a result of St George’s Knights dropping out of the league due to off-field circumstances. That has not stopped them from making the most of their place in the league, finding themselves with seven points and a brilliant win against Aspire. They face both West Bromwich sides, where there could be another upset on the cards, and also clash with Brighton and Leeds. Tyler Reeve continues to impress in the centre and if Teesside do anything this weekend, he will likely be a major force behind it.

In good form in their own Regional league, Villa Rockets find themselves in a cluster of teams sat on six points going into this weekend. They have a very tough start to the weekend, playing the Champions first before top-of-the-league Northern Thunder. Their following three games against Leeds, Nottingham and WBA Throstles could see them pick up some more points to keep themselves in a solid place in the division.

Despite winning their first four games with some slick football, the champions West Bromwich Albion PFC are in 2nd place, chasing after Northern Thunder. They play Villa, Teesside, Newcastle and Sevenoaks this weekend. On their day, they can beat anybody and there is an expectation that West Brom will keep up their 100% record and get back to the top of the table.

WBA Throstles are in transition, they picked up six points in their opening four games but it didn’t always look convincing. Their new squad members are taking some time to click and they are still struggling to deal with the loss of Dave Lewis from the team.
